What One Should Know About IVF Intro Vitro Fertilization

By Carolyn Fisher

In vitro fertilization refers to a complex series of procedures which are used in the treatment of fertility or genetic problems. The main aim is usually to assist in conception of a child. During the procedure, there is collection of mature eggs from the ovaries, which are then fertilized by sperms in a lab. This is followed by implantation of the fertilized eggs in the uterus. One cycle of IVF intro vitro fertilization takes about two weeks.

This is the most effective procedure when it comes to assisted reproduction. It is done using eggs of a woman and the sperms of their partner, or there is also the option of using eggs and sperms which are retrieved from donors. In some instances, a gestation carrier might be used. This is a women in whose uterus the embryo is implanted and is supposed to take the pregnancy to term.

The chances of one having a baby successfully using the procedure will depend on a number of factors. These include the age of the person and causes of the infertility. Further, it is a time-consuming process and which is also very costly. It should also be noted that it is invasive. In the event that more than one embryo is implanted within the uterus, IVF could result in pregnancy with more than one fetus, what is commonly referred to as multiple pregnancy.

There are a number of risks that one should expect when considering the procedure. The first is the risk of multiple pregnancies. This is what happens when there is implantation of more than one embryo. With such pregnancies, there will be a higher risk of early labor and also low birth weight then when the pregnancy was with a single fetus. Also, the probability of miscarriage in women that conceive through this procedure will increase. This is especially so for older women.

Babies whose conception is through IVF are more likely to experience birth defects that those conceived through normal means. However, the age of a mother is what majorly contributes to defects, notwithstanding mode of conception. IVF increases the chances. Emotional, financial and physical are things that one should be prepared for.

When choosing where to have the procedure, there is the need to consider their success rate. The rate of success will depend on methods used by the clinic and how many people they are treating at any given time. The charges of the services should be confirmed too. Before the cycle starts, there are some screenings that one undergoes. Ovarian reserve testing is one of them and involves determining quality and quantity of eggs. There will also be semen analysis.

There are various steps involved for the actual procedure. These include ovulation induction, retrieval of the eggs, sperm retrieval, fertilization and then finally transfer of the embryo. Each cycle takes roughly two weeks and more than one cycle is required.

There are some instances when IVF procedure gets cancelled. There are several reasons for that. It could be because there are not enough follicles developing. It could also be that there is premature ovulation.
