Facts About Long Island Hearing Aids

By Joseph Roberts

Recent studies indicate that most people perceive hearing as a second rate sense to vision. This has led to people with hearing problems to delay treatment which sometimes can lead to serious and untreatable conditions. Sound perception is of great importance as much as vision. Unfortunately, many people especially in the current modern society do not see it that way. This makes them to engage in some habits that can damage or impair hearing. Here are facts regarding Long Island hearing aids.

Malfunctioning of either the outer, the middle or the inner ear is one of the aspects related to hearing damage. Some of its causes range from possible ear infections, very loud noise which would possibly affect the ear drum, foreign bodies inside the ear, traumas and viral infections. They are categorically divided into three main types.

Conductive loss mainly takes place in babies. It happens when an infant is born with no ear canal or in some cases the ear can fails to open after the baby is born. This is a temporary condition which can be corrected through the use of electronic devices that are used to amplify sounds for the child to hear clearly. In some cases surgery is required to open the ear canal.

Secondly, sensorineural type which results from acoustic traumas can be caused by loud sounds that cause dysfunction of the eardrum. This consequently damages the inner ear. A combination of conductive and sensoneural causes mixed sound perception loss, an indication of damage of the outer, the middle and the inner ear parts.

Hearing loss is caused by different causes some of which can be successfully treated with medicine, surgery or use of electronic devices. A hearing aid is basically a tiny electronic gadget that is worn behind an ear. These devices are meant to amplify sounds so that an individual with sound perception loss can listen, communicate and fully participate in their daily activities.

The device is effective for individuals whose inability to sense sound is as a result of damage of small sensory cells found within inner ears. This problem can be brought by injury loud noise, diseases, old age or certain medications. The device is made up of three parts a microphone, speaker, and amplifier and works by boosting sound vibrations that go into the ear.

This allows surviving hair cells to detect vibrations and change them into neural signals to be passed to the brain for the purpose of processing. The strength of the gadget depends on the extent to which the hair cells have been damaged. Hence, the greater the damage the greater the amplification of the device needs to be. However, it is important to know that in case of severe damage, the device may not be of a noticeable good to the individual affected.

To determine whether a person needs a hearing aid and the type of aid needed you will need to visit an ear specialist also known as an otolaryngologist who will do examination and decide on the extent of the damage. The specialist will then recommend the best devices for a patient. These devices come in different styles. There are those that people wear behind their ears and connect to an ear mold placed on outer ears and those worn in the ear fixed in the outer ear.
