Dealing with automobile mechanics if you are a woman

By George Dodson

Why do mechanics have a reputation when it comes to women and getting cars repaired? The prevailing attitude among some mechanics seems to be that women don't have as much information about cars as men do. The above is not to mean that all mechanics possess this attitude but a big numbers does and this is of heavy concern. How can women retaliate so as to upset this trend? What can be done so that women are not taken advantage of by mechanics?

There is a strategy that you can employ as a woman when dealing with mechanics. The first thing is to become educated. Read that automobile manual. get in the know of how your car runs. Become familiar with how often you change the fluids, how to operate the controls, and other information vital to keep your machine running.

The second part of the strategy is understanding what you can do yourself. You can save a lot of money by doing the simple things such as changing wiper blades, fuses, headlights and taillights, and keeping fluid levels where they should be. It is apparent that taking these actions at hand keeps you away from your mechanic. You can also get to save a lot of money if you are dealing with an hourly charging mechanic.

If you happen to be a woman and must deal with a mechanic, find a reliable one. Inspect the mechanic that you are dealing with. Check if there are reports of trouble with their businesses. Ask your friends and relatives were the best place to go to get quality work at reasonable prices, without being ripped off. When you find a mechanic that's reliable, and doesn't want to take advantage of you, stay with that mechanic. It might be tempting to go somewhere else based on slick advertising, but it's best to stay where you know you'll be treated well.

Next time you visit your mechanic, you should be in the know about the trouble your car is facing. This information can be accessed from the internet or perusing through the special manual that came with your car. Your mechanic will think twice before ripping you off if you go to him with this information. You only need to mouth the words "I think it's probably something bad." As this gives the mechanic the go ahead for a potential rip off.

Ensure that your mechanic points out the problem with your car once you make a point visiting him. If you do not understand the problem, ensure to tell the mechanic that you are keen on finding out the problem. Most the time if the mechanic is willing to show you what the problem is he or she is being honest with you. The situation is most especially true when you show some knowledge on the problem. At times, you might know how the problem your car has but unwilling to take care of it.
