Web Design for Leads

By Kris T. Larsson

A new website or a relaunch of a site is a critical enterprise for every business. With the wealth of data on conversion marketing, it's critical that you employ this information in the overall structure of your launch. There is a lot of data and testing that is being done and if you can make yourself aware of it, you'll be well served. Conversion marketing is a fast moving field supported by science. In other words, hard data backs up theory. Make sure the agency you are working with gives conversion marketing its due when planning your site.

You're site cannot just be beautiful. One should be slightly reluctant to work with a designer who has no business experience other than their own. Or furthermore, someone with very little appetite or experience for conversion marketing. Your site should be aesthetically pleasing. As long as it is connected and supporting your business and your targets. Usability and business goals should drive your website design.

You site needs to be your best salesperson... in the form of sales, leads, or sign ups. Your website is now the face of your company and people will judge you based on their interaction with and impression of your site. The science backs up this claim. Whether or not people will buy your product, is strongly influenced by their experience with your website.

Web Design Basics

Think about color contrast when you are contemplating your site. And don't forget to consider how those colors will look across different devices. Stay away from dark backgrounds unless there is a very good reason to do so. Smartphones and dark backgrounds are not a great marriage. Take the time to see how your site shows on different screen resolutions and on tablets and smartphones.

Less is more. There is a tendency for people to try to cover every possible aspect of their business on their website or on a page. People don't surf the web this way. They scan. And they have very short attention spans. One needs to simplify. Try to limit your goals to just one or two per page. Don't just give love to your homepage. A purpose and a call to action should define each page you have.

Your site has to load quickly. If your site takes more than three seconds to load, you've lost your visitor. There are a number of free online locations where you can test your site speed to ensure that you are not overloading your page.

It's not just a buzz word, video really is pushing the internet and business on the internet. It really is essential to have some form of video at your site. It's not a luxury reserved for large companies. People expect you to have video. Conversions increase with video. Both time and engagement levels are improved when you put video at your site. And the costs of video for web are inexpensive. You don't need to hire a professional video production company for most of your online video needs. And if you do, don't worry, the costs have come down dramatically. There are some guidelines you should follow and there are basic quality standards that need to be met. Above all, make sure the sound is excellent. People will tolerate average picture quality but not poor sound.

Testimonials - text is okay, but you can do better. Video is a great medium for testimonials. It is more believable and more personal. And make sure your testimonials don't look like they were pushed or staged. Keeping it natural and in the words of your clients will lend itself to a more genuine and valuable testimonial.
