So, at this point are you over 50 and unemployed? If your answer is yes as you're one of the few who's "made it" to a desirable retirement and you're sitting on the beaches of paradise, well awesome for you. You're to be applauded as you've accomplished a dream of us all. But if you answered yes and still need money at the end of the month, then maybe this article will have something of merit for you. That's my hope.
There are no easy solutions for being over fifty and unemployed. That being said we're still going to dive into this topic as there are so many, heck, even an ever increasing number of folks who are finding themselves in this group.
Just today I heard of another tragic job loss, maybe even career loss, of a fellow in his early sixties who lost his job due to what his employer termed "a medical condition". Medical condition or not, he needed his job as he's still several years from retirement. So we'll never really know the real reason for his termination. Companies are expert at giving self serving reasons for laying off. And then again, with the suffering economy, often they can't make their payrolls and have no choice but to lay off. So we're caught in the middle. And many of the over fifty crowd have lost their jobs because they were in the higher paid portion of their company's staff, so were the first to go when tough times hit. Whatever your reason for now being in the ranks of the unemployed let's turn this discussion to some possible directions for you to get some income flowing back in.
Your attitude is the first thing you must guard. The hands of time can't be reversed, so hard as you may find it, you must get it out of yourself that you've been the unfortunate one. Loosing a longtime position is one of the toughest things that could have happened to you, but face the fact that tomorrow brings a new beginning. Use this to your advantage! Now, first thing tomorrow get to your unemployment office and claim your benefits.
Next, go to work looking for the jobs open in your area. And while looking understand that a drastic cut in pay will probably be necessary to obtain a new position. Don't throw out lower paying offers hoping for something better. You can still keep searching for the better job after taking the lesser paying one. But at least you've got some amount of income moving your way again.
And here's one more helpful idea. Understand that your most imperative mission is to get out and get some degree of a steady paycheck coming in again. But once you've tackled this toughest of challenges, I encourage you to take a look at some form of supplemental income. I'm not talking about a second job.
What we are talking about is an endeavor that can grow as you put more of yourself into it. Ask yourself what you really like doing and go see if you can make it happen. This could lead to the start of a business you could call your own. If you'll permit me, I'd like to point you toward one that is exciting for me.
I love to write. But, I can't afford the time to simply write with the dream of one day being published. I've faced the music on this one as destitute writers abound. But I've have found a sweet alternative... blogging. And not just blogging, but blogging within a community of like minded folks. Many of the folks were also looking for a way to increase their income. Getting online and starting a blog has been their answer. But you can't just run out and start a blog. You'll go nowhere fast in regard to making an income.
What's the next step? Actually it's a fairly simple approach. Join a community that's helping others to some decent income levels by blogging. It's work but they'll be with you while you're learning the ropes. However, remember to find your new primary job first.
Where ever your path takes you from here my wish is that you are soon on the other side of being over 50 and unemployed.
